Awareness training for all Care staff who work in premises where bed rails may be used.

Course Objectives /Aims & Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcomes:

  • Better understanding of rails and their purpose
  • Clearer understanding of risks associated with bed rail use and the consequences of incorrect use

Course Aims:

On completion of the course delegates will be able to ;
  • State the differing types of bed rails and their correct use
  • State the legal requirements require for use of bed rails
  • Explain how a risk assessment is completed and why it must be done
  • Explain why bed rails must always be a last resort
  • List procedures to follow when fitting bed rails

  • The law- RIDDOR. HSW 1974, MHSW 1992. PUWER 1998
  • Medical devices Regulations 2002
  • Safety risks to Service user
  • Suitability of rails chosen
  • Equipment checks and maintenance
  • Risk assessment - client groups, dignity, alternatives
  • Record keeping and documentation
  • Training
  • Safe fitting
